Autumn Herbal Weekend

In this extensive workshop weekend, The Lodge at Woodloch's own Nathaniel Whitmore, Master Herbalist and Shiatsu Master, offers a 3-day series to help you create herbal and holistic harmony with the season. Guests will learn herbal solutions for boosting immunity & keeping the lungs healthy, foods to harmonize with the season, T'ai Chi & Yoga Exercises for overall health and to benefit the lungs and seasonal Spa Treatments for immunity and lung health. Sessions can be taken as a series or each class can stand alone individually to provide insight and practical guidance.

Friday, October 28
Autumn Sunset Tea - 5:00pm
Because the autumn season corresponds with the setting sun, the weekend kicks off with an evening meet and greet to learn through one-on-one interaction with Master Herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore how select herbal teas can be incorporated seasonally to help harmonize the body and mind with the time of year. The tea hour will pay tribute to the setting sun and help welcome in the season known for harvesting, gathering resources and storing energy. (Sunset: 6:06pm)
Hues of The Chakras - 8:30pm
Join Nathaniel Whitmore for an introductory presentation on chakras, the seven energy centers of the body. Learn how to become aware of your chakras, how to address your energy imbalances and how to understand the significance of your chakras as they relate to your life, the seasons and your well being.
Saturday, October 29
Creating Herbal and Holistic Harmony with the Autumn Season - 11:00am
Explore an introduction of the 5 Chinese elements and other eastern medicine philosophies driving the theory behind creating herbal and holistic harmony with the seasons. This session delves into the gathering energies and why they are important in autumn, the fall season correspondences such as evening/sunset, west, the waning moon & old age, and also explains how harmony with these correspondences will result in better health and wellness throughout this time of year. Discover autumn foods that relate to this philosophy and how they can be incorporated into your diet.
Seasonal Cooking Demonstration - 3:00pm
Executive Chef Peter Schott and Master Herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore will be “cooking up” items that combine foods and herbs that correspond to the autumn season and often offer healing qualities. Local and organic foods will be chosen and used for their seasonal colors along with seeds, nuts and grains as well as seasonal vegetables and mushrooms for their flavorful and healthy ways.
Sunday, October 30
Mushroom Walk - 10:00am
Join Master Herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore for a casual walk on our beautiful grounds in search of wild mushrooms. Our area is home to some of the world’s most prized edible and medicinal mushrooms and this is a prime time for many of these species. Nathaniel regularly harvests many varieties of mushrooms for his table and seasonally prepares mushroom tonics for health. Advance sign up required through Spa Concierge.
Staying Healthy in Autumn Presentation - 11:00am
Herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore leads guests through this 50-minute workshop on how to use herbs to boost immunity and establish healthy lungs for the season. Nathaniel introduces medicinal herbs for immunity tonics, diaphoretics (surface-relieving herbs), and expectorants (herbs that help with clearing of lungs) and establishes different ways to prepare the herbs for maximum benefits. Gain resources, practical advice on herbal remedies and valuable insight as to how herbs can be used to fight colds and flus. Nathaniel specializes in wild edible and medicinal plants, Herbology, and whole food dietetics. Private consultations are also available through Spa Concierge.

Breathing with Awareness: The Lung Spirit
The Lungs are the organ most associated with our personal sense of self. We come into the world with our first breath, and we leave with our last. In this class we will get our chi flowing with gentle exercises to clear stagnant energy out of our lungs. Then we will relax on the floor as we inquire into the nature of our breathing, learning to trust our Lung Spirit to breathe us.
Class Time: Friday, October 28th at 4:00pm and Sunday, October 30th at 3:00pm
Zen T'ai Chi (Focusing on the Ba Duan Jin)
Also known as the “Eight Pieces of Silk Brocade”, the Ba Duan Jin consists of gentle stretching and lengthening of muscles and tendons, helping to stimulate the meridians and the internal organs. This early morning practice will end with the Primordial T'ai Chi form allowing you to start your day centered and refreshed.
