A REMINDER FOR SELF-CARE

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Cancer treatment and recovery can often feel all consuming. It is never more important to make time for self-care to keep your body and mind strong during challenging times. Of course, there are oodles of “lists” to turn to but some of our favorite advice comes from Erika Still, our Oncology-trained massage therapy practitioner who has been practicing for over 13 years. Her favorite advice to share is:

Spend time in nature. Nature has a way of soothing the soul and helping to put things into perspective. There are many benefits (both physical and mental) from breathing in phytoncides from plants and trees, soaking in Vitamin D from the sun, and grounding yourself into the Earth.

Take long baths. Try a bath soak such as this Soothing Herbal Salt Soak from Treatments Manager, Amanda Clabaugh:

Soothing Herbal Salt Soak

  • ¼ cup Epsom salts
  • 1/4 cup coarse sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon dried lavender flowers
  • 1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers

Place all items into bath water and enjoy!

Journal. Our Journaling for Self Discovery class allows guests to learn the basics of writing a journal through a guided self-exploration using ones’ own observations, thoughts, and feelings. Writing allows you to process more deeply.

Find a creative outlet. Whether finding a mindless activity such as an adult coloring book, or developing a mindful outlet such as mandala creation, a creative outlet is a great way to put your mind at ease. Decorating with Nature is a guest favorite, offering guests the chance to create an art masterpiece inspired by nature.

Get a massage (from a trained Oncology Massage Therapist). At The Lodge at Woodloch, any of our spa treatments can be adjusted to work for guests with special oncology needs. Whether going through cancer treatments or on the path to recovery, a special knowledge base is needed to properly care for your body during this time. Our team of specially-trained therapists are ready to help create a transformative experience that your body will be thankful for.
