Staying Healthy with the Winter Season
It can be challenging to avoid ailments during the cold and flu season. Luckily, for those of us that try to eat seasonally, immune boosting foods are a mainstay in winter cuisine.
During mid-summer, as we enjoy barbecues, fireworks, and beaches, our farmers are focusing on what they will be harvesting come Autumn to feed us all winter long. Storage crops, as they are known, have been selectively grown throughout the ages to not only thrive during periods of low light and cold temperatures, but also for extended shelf life. Garlic, onion, and leeks, as well as winter squash and cabbages are designed to last well into the new year while root veggies like radish, rutabega, kohlrabi, carrots, and beets are all in it for the long haul- typically keeping until the first crops of spring. Ancient Chinese medicine teaches that all foods have a yin and yang or a warming and cooling influence on the body so by eating crops grown in cool weather, you’ll be able to benefit from the food’s natural warming effect. This combined with seasonal cooking methods like the one pot meals of soups, stews, and chilis that provide the body with a warming energy that is key to fending off illness.

Sound Therapy
You may have experienced the healing power of music already. Perhaps at a difficult time in your life you played a song that had special meaning for you, which you found comforting. Sound healing therapy uses the vibration of sound in a targeted way, to fine tune our bodies, minds, and emotions. This helps us to relax completely, sleep better, improve concentration, and even increase our confidence.
Sound therapy has long been used to manage a broad range of health conditions. The treatments are based on the understanding that all forms of matter vibrate at different frequencies. Factors such as stress, depression and disease cause cells and organs within our bodies to vibrate less than ideal frequencies.
Many believe that gong sound therapy can help reduce stress and liberate emotional blockages. Scientific evidence suggests that certain forms of sound therapy prompt damaged human DNA strands to repair themselves. Some tones are thought to promote healing, and also to enhance happiness. Many alternative healthcare clinics offer sound therapies such as gong meditation to help manage various ailments.
Gong Meditation classes are offered several times per week. Specific class days/times can be found in our class & activity schedules.
